Denpasar Festival 2013
The Denpasar municipality will hold its annual Denpasar Festival from Dec. 28 to 31 around the area of Jl. Gajah Mada and Catus Pata Catur Muka, where the residents’ creative works will be displayed.
Mayor Ida Bagus Rai Dharmawijaya Mantra shared with Bali Daily that the festival was part of the efforts to build Denpasar as a creative city that adhered to the values of local wisdom.
He said the city administration was aiming to focus on empowering creative enterprises, including cuisine, fashion and handicrafts.
Denpasar will also be proposed by the Tourism and Creative Economy Ministry to UNESCO for inclusion in the global network of creative cities.
In its sixth year, the four-day festival has the theme “Creative in Motion” to prove that the city’s creativity is not merely a discourse, but has been realized as a solution in life.
“We want to prove that the creativity of Denpasar residents is very dynamic in all fields. A wide range of creative artworks have been created, including those we are exhibiting in the festival, although we have not been able to fulfill the expectation of all parties,” Mantra said.
Among the programs scheduled in the festival are Jelajah Pusaka (exploring the city’s heritage), a festival of traditional games, chefs’ competition, fashion show, theater, local bands’ concert, as well as an exhibition of photos, handicrafts and traditional delicacies.
Jelajah Pusaka is a special program dedicated to the city’s students, in which they will be invited to learn about the history of the city by exploring historical buildings. The trip will start from Puri Pemecutan royal house, head along Jl. Gajah Mada – well-known as the city’s trade center, and finish at Puri Satria.
Meanwhile, in the festival of traditional games, the festival’s organizing committee will invite Made Taro, a noted figure in the development and preservation of traditional games, to participate.
The festival will be opened by a parade, art performance, Emoni Band concert and collaboration titled “Bali Puisi Musik” (Bali Poetic Music) with two famous cartoonists Kadek “Jango” Paramartha and Cece Riberu. On the third day, children from Balawan’s music school will collaborate with the musician himself.
“Bid farewell to the sun of 2013” will feature an art parade as the highlight of the last day. “The festival is very much open to the public, with free entry,” said Dewa Gde Rai, the municipality’s spokesman.
All programs during the festival will run from 8 a.m. until 10:30 p.m. daily. As in previous years, the festival’s area will be closed to traffic. “Visitors should park their vehicles in the designated areas, and there will be traffic diversions,” Rai said.
Starting Friday, vehicles heading to Jl. Gajah Mada will be rerouted to Jl. Sulawesi, while those from Jl. Kartini heading to Jl. Suci should pass through Jl. Sumatera. Vehicles heading to Jl. Veteran will be rerouted to Jl. Karna heading to Jl. Durian.
Vehicles from Jl. Surapati will be rerouted to Jl. Surapati toward Jl. Kapten Agung. Those heading to Jl. Sudirman toward Jl. Udayana will be rerouted to Jl. Sutoyo at the opening of the festival in the evening. During the festival, Jl. Udayana heading to Jl. Veteran will be rerouted to Jl. Surapati-Jl. Kaliasem-Jl. Durian.
Several festival pre-events were held last week, including the IT, horticulture and husbandry festivals.
